Full Platform Recovery After Server Wipeout
The Problem
The client's team accidentally deleted their production server on Hetzner, taking down a platform serving 100K+ research abstracts and active subscription billing. The hosting provider's grace period to recover the server had already expired. Backups that were running on the server were linked to the destroyed instance. The platform was completely offline with active subscribers unable to access content.
The Solution
Our senior systems engineer rebuilt the entire platform from archived backups, fighting through zombie processes, FPM overloading, and VMs that refused to start. Coordinated Master/Slave database recovery and load balancer reconfiguration. After restoration, implemented offsite backups to DigitalOcean Spaces under our own account so the client could never accidentally destroy their only copy again.
Results
- Full platform restored from backups in under 24 hours
- 100K+ research abstracts back online
- Active subscriptions and billing preserved
- Offsite backup system deployed to DigitalOcean Spaces
- Disaster recovery protocol documented for future incidents
- Zero data loss from the recovery
